In 1995, during the war in Chechnya, Aslan Gaisumov’s family members escaped the bombs dropping on Grozny. They fled with a group of twenty-one people, crammed into a single Volga truck; a contemporary Raft of the Medusa. Aslan Gaisumov (b. 1991, Grozny) developed an oeuvre based on both his own and the collective memory, which he transforms and transcends.
